SCHROCK WINS AT ORANGE SHOW AND RETAINS USAC SOCAL POINTS LEAD
CULPEPER,
VA (June 15, 2010) –
16 year-old Eli Schrock picked up his second win in his rookie
season on asphalt, winning Saturday night’s USAC Western Pavement
and USAC SoCal Ford Focus Midget Series at Orange Show Speedway in
San Bernardino, Calif.
Schrock led all 30 laps on the quarter-mile asphalt oval, but had
avoided a serious crash and held off a strong charge from the second
place car.
Schrock is in his rookie season of driving for Ron Sutton’s Winner’s
Circle based in Sacramento, Calif.
The SoCal division championship contender admittedly “struggled a
little bit in practice” and qualified sixth out of 13 cars.
Starting on the front row alongside teammate Austin Farley, Schrock
took the lead on the opening lap.
On lap 17, Schrock dodged a large accident on the backstretch,
having to go to the inside to avoid a flipping car. Luckily, Orange
Show Speedway’s infield is completely paved and Schrock made it
through safely.
The final 23 laps saw Schrock leading but facing a strong charge
from second place Cody Gerhardt.
Gerhardt gave Schrock several taps and even a hard shot on the final
lap, but Schrock held on for the hard-earned victory.
The victory also moved Schrock back into the lead of the SoCal
division. In four starts, Schrock has accumulated two wins, a
third, and a fourth place finish.
“It was a really exciting race,” Schrock said. “We made adjustments
before the main and the car improved a lot. I knew Cody’s line was
really low so I was ready for that.”
Schrock will have two weeks after before a double-header weekend on
July 1 at Las Vegas and July 3 at Orange Show Speedway.
“We had the pole last time at Vegas and needed about ten more laps
to challenge for the win,” Schrock said. “I’m excited to go back
and I feel like we are the ones to beat!”
Schrock continues to be one of the most impressive drivers on the
Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle team.
“Eli is a natural and is a threat each time he climbs into the car,”
head of driver development Ron Sutton said. “With the way he handles
himself, you would never guess that this is his first season on
asphalt.”
